A rare commemorative mug made by Minton, England, celebrating the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) on 12 May 1937.

The front bears finely printed portraits of the royal couple framed within the Order of the Garter motto, “Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense”, and crowned by the royal insignia. The surrounding oak and laurel motifs symbolize strength and loyalty. The inscription around the rim reads:

“King George VI · Queen Elizabeth · May 1937”

The underside carries the official Minton factory mark, the British Pottery Manufacturers Federation crest, and a dedication:

“Presented by the Town Council of Bramhall” (local civic issue).

This piece was among the official coronation souvenirs commissioned for municipalities across the Commonwealth and presented to dignitaries or local citizens as a keepsake.

Collector Notes

Minton’s 1937 coronation mugs are among the finest quality royal commemorative ceramics of the period, appreciated for their clear transfer design and solid craftsmanship. Localised issues (with specific town dedications) are less common and thus slightly more valuable to collectors.

Royal commemorative ware from the interwar period remains a strongly collected category, particularly those associated with King George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s coronation, as it marked the restoration of stability after Edward VIII’s abdication.
